Hi friends!
I don’t usually work on secret projects. I’m usually a fan of sharing transparent updates of the work I’m doing along the way. It’s fun for me to build in public (a tech concept I’ve applied to my art practice).
But I’ve been secretly making a new coloring book for the past few months! I had an idea to make a mini version of my coloring book from last year and it quickly came together.
So here I am announcing a surprise project- I just launched Electrify Your Home: A Mini Coloring Book!
As soon as I got the sample, I knew it was something special. It instantly felt like a perfect holiday or corporate gift. It’s packed with 30 pages of the greatest hits from my original coloring book, new art, and activity pages.
Since I didn’t share updates along the way, I’ll share the behind-the-scenes process now!
1: Print mockups
I was home for a weekend at my parents place (with access to a printer) and decided to test out a mini version. I printed out my favorite pages on 6”x6” and 5”x5” paper to see what size would feel best.
2. Paint cover
I wanted to keep the cover simple since I knew it was going to be small.
3. Compile in InDesign and Photoshop
I compiled the art and designed the flow of the book to be cohesive. I looked for what was missing in the story to design new art.
4. Make new art
I designed new pages with less text and large spaces to color since it was a smaller book. I added in activity pages to encourage people to color their own version of prompts.
5. Order Sample
I use Amazon Kindle Print on Demand for my books (and have many feelings about Amazon…). But they make it incredibly easy to publish a book and not need to order hundreds of copies/carry inventory.
6. Make edits
After receiving the sample, I made changes to the cover to make it more readable and small edits to the flow of the book.
7. Publish
I’m emailing you to tell you I published the book!!
For my NYC climate weekers, I published it just in time for climate week in case you want to gift a speaker or attendees of an event!
I’m really proud of how this all came together. It feels so fun to take an idea in my head and transform it into something in the real world.
I’m actively working on making a children’s book right now (and that is not-so-secret)! Will keep you in the loop on updates 😊
Amazing!!!! Congrats Nicole!!!
