I’ve lived a block from Prospect Park for almost a year now and I’ve never painted outside. I work on my iPad all the time in the park, but I’ve never taken my little watercolor kit and a brush out to enjoy the greenery. I keep saying that I’m going to, but never get around to it.
Yesterday, I finally got around to it! I had an idea to teach an en plein air watercolor class. "En plein air" is a French phrase that means "in the open air." It refers to the act of painting outdoors, capturing scenes directly from nature. I posted a poll on social media to see if I should do it at the park of the beach. The park won and so here we are!Â
I scurried off after dinner last night to do a test run, take some photos, and bring this vision to life. And it was so lovely. After a hectic few weeks, bringing my brush outside felt so nice and relaxing. I tuned into the feelings and sounds of nature and brought that to the paper.
For my New York friends, I’ll be teaching this En Plein Air Watercolor Class in Prospect Park on July 16 at 6:30. I will guide us in an activity to deepen our connection to nature through art. You will leave with a beautiful painting of Prospect Park and new creative friends! RSVP here!Â
