Hi friends,

It’s time for my Creative Recommendations for March! These are just for my lovely ~patrons~ aka my paying subscribers.

Each month, I curate my favorite things I’ve been reading, learning, watching, and making art with. If you want to upgrade to receive these once a month, you’d make my day 🥰

This newsletter is made with lots of love and creativity. If you’d like to support more climate art, please consider becoming a free or paid subscriber 💖

Reading

I started reading The Creative Act by Rick Rubin and it reminds me of Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert (my favorite book on creativity). It talks about enjoying creativity as a practice rather than prioritizing the outcome. I’m savoring every page. Here’s one of my favorite quotes:

Making Art With

My Canvas phone mount for filming timelapses. I’ve refused to film myself painting for ages but I’m working on getting over that! To start, I’m trying to batch film the content of me painting and then deal with the footage later.

I’ve been filming timelapses of the last 10 paintings I’m doing for my Quietest Places in NYC book. I’m softly kicking myself for not filming the 45 paintings I already did for the book…but it’s better late than never!

Me trying to get better on camera 🙈

Learning

One of my dream goals is to get a cartoon in the New Yorker! I’m trying to get back into drawing New Yorker cartoons regularly so I can make a packet to submit. I took at class with Sofia Warren and J.A.K. last month at the Figure Assembly run by Julia Rothman.

This was the cartoon that came out of it.

Watching

I’m still working on getting better at drawing people, so I started sketching on the subway. I’ve been watching some great tutorials on Youtube from Sketching Scottie who has a really simple, actionable technique. Here are a few of my favorite videos from him:

  • How to Sketch People Quickly and Accurately

  • How to Draw Faces Loosely
