This January, I started working on a coloring book about food systems. I began a deep dive into the food world through reading a bunch of books, making a crowdsourced Google Sheet of resources, and talking to experts in the food industry. I even started illustrating a few pages. I quickly became overwhelmed with the complexity of the food system and realized this wasn’t just a ~quick project~. I decided to put it on the back burner and learn slowly over a longer period of time and pick it back up when I felt ready.
The biggest surprise that came from this process was discovering I love cooking! I wrote a newsletter in December called “I am not a foodie” about how I basically never cook. I am so proud to announce that I have gone full 180 and cook most of my meals now. My latest obsession has been joining the Park Slope food co-op to get amazing produce.
Last week, I went to an event focused on food, climate, and activism. They used food as a tool to bridge topics of culture and politics. It was a dreamy event in the park filled with some of the best food I’ve ever had and I left feeling nourished on many levels. My favorite dish was fresh focaccia, macerated strawberries, goat cheese, and za'atar. I even met people who work at Blue Hill Farm and the Food Network!
I’m starting to see the beautiful connection between food and art, which just works for my brain. My newest idea is to “cook by color.” I love the idea of trying to use as many colors as possible in a recipe. When I grocery shop now, I think in colors rather than recipes and it ends up with way more fun results!
Here are a few things I’ve been trying out. I am far from a food photographer, but here they are. My favorite recipe I cook nearly every week is the General Tso Tofu from Minimalist Baker.
I wanted to share a free digital download of 6 of the coloring pages I made for the food systems coloring book. Download them here to print or color on your iPad!
I also have some ideas of more food illustration I’d like to do. My friend Caroline Saunders writes a newsletter called Pale Blue Tart about how dessert can be a climate solution and we did a little collab that was very fun!
If you have any favorite vegetarian recipes, Instagram accounts, or food blogs that you love, please send them my way!
