Climate Art 101 starts on Monday!
Learn how to make art for climate storytelling
Hi friends,
If you have been wanting to tap into your creativity this summer, I have a fun way to start! Climate Art 101 starts on Monday. This course is designed to help you learn how to use art as a tool for climate communications and become a better storyteller.
In the past 2 years, over 300 pieces of climate art have been made by students. Honestly, it makes me emotional to think that I’ve helped facilitate hundreds of pieces of art to exist. My goal is to create solutions-oriented art, helping people share the possibilities of a future we want to live in.
The heart of the program is a 30-day challenge to make art every day. I provide prompts, and you share them in our private Slack group. Or you can share them publicly like how Clare Wood shared of her series of Project Drawdown solutions.
It’s so motivating and inspiring to be a part of a community of creatives in climate, sharing work each day.
The last 2 weeks of the course are a capstone project where you get to make your own climate stripes, inspired by Ed Hawkins’ work.
One of the most epic pieces created was Roberta Burnes 6 foot long quilt.
Seeing each student evolve and develop their own style is incredible. Everyone has their own interpretation of the prompts in ways that I could not possibility imagined myself.
All skill levels and mediums are welcome. You just need a curiosity for creating art.
Course Curriculum
Here’s what we’ll explore each week:
Week 1: Climate Art Case Studies
Week 2: Best Practices for Climate Communication
Week 3: The Joy of Learning Through Making Art
Week 4: Art for Climate Anxiety
Week 5: Climate Stripes
Week 6: Action Plan for the Future
Note: I want this class to be accessible to all. If finances are a challenge, just reply to this email.
The course breaks down everything I’ve learned in the past 4 years about how to be a climate communicator and makes it easy to get started.
By the end of the 6-week virtual course, you’ll learn to make compelling art for climate storytelling. You’ll become a better communicator and make friends with other creatives in climate.
So far, 4 cohorts have gone through Climate Art 101, growing our community to 100 wonderful Creatives in Climate from all over the world. I can’t wait to see what this next cohort creates.
I’m only running one live cohort a year, so if you’ve wanted to join, this is a great time. You can learn more here or feel free to message me if you have any questions!
Art Prompt for You
One of my favorite prompts in the first week is to make nature mandalas.
How to make a nature mandala: Collect natural elements and arrange them in a symmetrical pattern to create a mandala. If you want to make one, feel free to send me a photo or share on Substack. I’d love to see!
