A coloring book about climate change 🎨📚
My next big climate art project! Tell me what you want to see in it, I really listen
Hi friends!
Greetings from a somewhat sunny part of Florida! I’m on the Gulf Coast of Florida in an area that weirdly has a -1 hour time zone change from EST on a family vacation for 2 weeks. The weather has been mostly lovely, but shockingly close to NYC weather on some days which is eerie. This week we’ve swam outside nearly everyday in a heated pool, went for a long bike ride on Valentine’s day, and played a bit of tennis yesterday. I feel really grateful that my family likes to be active on our vacations!
I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting since the new year, and even more on this vacation. I went on a family vacation at this same time last year in the peak of my 100 days of watercolor challenge. I was working both full time, family time, and watercolor time. I was stressed.
Flash forward to one year later- I left my job 2 months after that vacation and I’m doing the most fulfilling work I’ve ever done. I get to collaborate with climate startups, non-profits, government organizations- all doing incredibly impactful work in the environmental space. I love supporting and amplifying their messaging, plus creating silly ideas of how to communicate climate concepts on my own.
I’ve been wanting to choose a big project to work on this year. I find having a goal larger than my day-to-day work helpful as a freelancer. My 100 day challenge was perfect for that. I’ve thought about doing another compilation of my favorite pieces of my art like an annual release book series. But I kind of want to do something a bit different.
So, I’m creating a coloring book about climate change! I haven’t told anyone this yet, but now since I told y’all I’m gonna make it happen! I like to commit to something ambitious and then figure it out as I go. I have done some initial research to make sure I feel like it’s possible (manufacturing-wise).
I’m thinking I want the theme to be focused around electrification + renewable energy. I want it to be for all ages, almost like the Zen-doodle type of coloring books that you would buy as a meditation for adults or kids alike. I’m finding that that’s my vibe, creating climate art for all ages.
But what I want to hear from you is what you want to see in it! Reply to this email with your thoughts. My favorite part of what I do is hearing your suggestions and ideas. I truly take them to heart and keep a running list on my Trello board with every suggestion I’ve ever received.
On to the section of reflection!
Things I’m grateful for:
Being in Florida on the beach!! I love the beach so much and find infinite inspiration in the ocean.
Spending quality time with my family.
My foot and wrist have healed enough to play tennis and bike. I’ve been injured since August and in physical therapy. My foot is totally healed but I’m still working on my wrist. I really miss rock climbing and can’t wait for my wrist to be totally healed.
Seeing my Climate Cutie Valentine’s cards come to life (quite literally, seeing photos of people print and share them IRL)!
Things I’m looking forward to
Hosting 2 climate art workshops in honor of Women’s History Month.
Feb 28- MCJ climate art workshop on Feb 28th.
March 7- Meditate and Paint with licensed psychotherapist and certified ecotherapist, Maia Kiley.
Eating more biscuits here.
Daily beach walks and swimming outside as much as I can. I want to get outside and watercolor too.
Things I’m stressed about
Feeling pretty good right now! Vacation is actually feeling like a vacation and I’ll take it.
