Reading

I’ve been reading more graphic novels this month because my brain has been fried from everything going on and I haven’t been able to totally focus. Also they’re beautiful! One of my favorites is Poetry Comics by .

He has such a beautiful way of weaving together art with mindfulness. I’m obsessed with his simplicity and approachability. The rhythm of each frame is so calming.

I wanted to start making my own poetry comics about digital minimalism. This was the first one I did by hand. I drew it at an event I went to that was a phone-free evening.

Making Art With

My art expression has been mostly digital the past few months while building my app Free Time. Last month, I revamped the screenshots for the app store.

I’m really happy with how they came out! One of the most interesting things I did to improve them was post on a Reddit page designed for feedback on App Store screenshots. The people were super helpful (and direct, classic Reddit).

I really have fallen in love with UX and digital design in the past year through creating the app. If you want to spend less time scrolling social media, you can try out Free Time.

I’ve found it helpful work on new app features when I hit certain milestones. So when I hit 500 users, I pushed a new build with bug fixes. To celebrate launching my book, I let myself code a new feature I’ve wanted for a while, which is custom themes. Now you can change the colors, fonts, and layout of your locked apps. I really wanted to make the black and white version to make my phone look like a dumb phone.

Learning

How to launch a book. My book came out last week! It’s so surreal to see it in bookstores. I went to a few Barnes & Noble stores and was thrilled to see it on the shelves next to my favorite books about New York. Truly a dream come true.

Watching

Survivor!! Season 50 started last week and I am thrilled. This season is a special one with all returning players. And the first episode delivered! If you are a Survivor fan, please let me know because I need to yap about it with someone.

I was nearly as excited about Survivor as I was about my pub day 😅

Dreaming about

SUMMER! Oh man, am I over this winter. The 40-degree days are like summer compared to this winter. I started laughing to myself when I wrote this section because I started it with the same sentence last month. My apartment is finally temperate (no long 60 in the mornings), but that bonus snowstorm last weekend really was not necessary mid-Feb. It looks like next week is going to be in the 60s, and I cannot wait!!

From Substack post to Book Launch

My intention with this piece is to provide transparency of the process of starting a Substack, getting an offer from a publisher, getting an agent, the book-making process, and preparation for book launch. I always wondered what that path looked like, and hope this can be helpful for anyone working on or dreaming about writing a book one day!

My Substack presence at the time

I published that post in August 2024 when I had 4,000 subscribers. I had been writing a post every single week since I joined Substack in November 2022. Before Substack, I had 18,000 followers on Twitter. When Elon took over, it felt like my community was gone overnight. I wanted to make sure I had a space that wouldn’t be subject to an algorithm and that I could directly communicate with my community. So I joined Substack.

When I posted the Quietest Places in NYC post, it got about 10K views and the most replies to any email I had ever written.

I made it a paid post, with the paywall hiding the list of the quiet places on a Google map for my paying subscribers. This meant only paid subscribers could comment. Looking back, I would have made the post free so that people could comment and boost the engagement on Substack.

But it still had enough reach to find the right people and eventually turn into this book! You never know who’s reading your Substack friends.

About the Substack post

That post was the only Substack piece I’ve ever spent months working on. At the time, I wrote most of my posts in one or two days. I was focused on creating the routine of writing rather than writing perfect pieces.

When I had the idea for this post, I knew I wanted it to be special. I worked on it slowly over 3 months. I shared it with friends for feedback. I wanted to get it right. I didn’t know why at the time, but maybe I had a feeling it could turn into something bigger.

I also had some hesitation about publishing it because it was different than my other work. Most of my writing was about art and climate change solutions, hence the name of my Substack. I found a way to frame quiet as a climate change solution, so that felt like a way to weave my existing narrative in a subtle way. It also focused on New York, and I have readers from around the world. I didn’t know if writing about something localized was a good idea.

But it was something I wanted to exist that didn’t exist yet. Some of the best writing advice I’ve heard is to write for one person. I wanted to write this for my New York friends.

I’m really glad I followed that spark of interest and trusted my gut on hitting publish.

After the book deal interest

I started talking to my friends who had written books to get their advice on how to handle the interest. I learned it was a good idea to have an agent.

Miracle of miracles came when wrote an email that week called How to Write a Book. I replied to it and told her about the interest from Rizzoli. I asked her thoughts on having an agent and if she knew any that she would recommend.

I met Mari a few times in the past year, so it wasn’t a cold email, but her response was beyond generous. She had just made a list for another illustrator friend and said she thought it could work for me, too. She shared a list of the 18 agents she recommended with thoughts on each. I was in shock and in such gratitude!

Getting an agent

I discovered I needed to write formal query letters to these agents, so I studied that format and sent out all 18 emails. The first agent I emailed, who was #1 on Mari’s list, was Laurie Abkemeir. Laurie replied in less than 24 hours, and when we spoke the next day, she offered to represent me on the spot. I couldn’t believe it. I spoke to one other agent that week who also offered to represent me. I chose to go with Laurie, and suddenly I had an agent.

Disclaimer: I know this is not normal. Finding an agent can be extremely challenging. My friend Alice Lee helped me understand that because I had interest from the publisher, this made it more compelling for agents to want to represent me. I was thrilled.

I looped Laurie in on all my emails with Jim, and she helped guide me every step of the way to bring the book to life. Her insights have been spot on, and I am so grateful to have her on my team.

Writing a book proposal

My publisher needed 4 watercolor paintings, 4 sketches, writing samples for each, comparative titles, my bio, the full list of quietest places, and a high-level description for the book. I also needed to write a proposed publicity and marketing plan.

Until that time, most of my art had been creating watercolor infographics about climate change solutions. It was quite technical and playful. I never had painted trees in watercolors before, so I essentially had to develop a new art style overnight to create this book.

Laurie helped me edit and tighten up the book proposal, and I got the official offer for the book in mid-November. It was due at the end of April.

Producing the book

I knew 5 months was a fast turnaround, but I thought I could do it. It was a very intense period of work, but it made winter fly by. I got an art studio in DUMBO with 3 amazing artists (Johna, Liz Ryan, and Skye Mahaffie). That was an unbelievably great decision. Through the process of creating this book, my studiomates gave me incredible feedback and helped me become a better artist.

I got into a strict routine for production. I sketched on Mondays and Tuesdays so I could paint on Wednesdays. I batch-painted 3 or 4 paintings in one sitting, every single week for 4 months. As a watercolor artist, I like painting multiple pieces at once because it lets the layers dry as I rotate paintings. I was writing a little along the way, but I knew the art was going to take me more time than the writing, so I focused on that first.

I had a very intense spreadsheet to track all the work I needed to do. I tracked the progress of sketching, painting, writing, and acquiring photographs for each of the 55 locations.

I submitted everything on April 25, relieved and so proud of myself. In early June, I got the test proofs from my publisher and hung them above my desk. It was starting to become very real!

In mid-June, I got an email from my publisher that they loved the book and wanted 12 more locations. So spent the next 5 weeks of summer making 24 more pages. It was quite a whirlwind, but I’m really happy I ended up having those extra pages. It allowed me to have distance and think about which gaps were missing from the book that I could fill.

Edits, layout, and cover design

In May, I got the writing edits and had 2 weeks to revise. There were no art edits, which was incredible because I had mentally prepared myself to redo several paintings.

We worked on the cover design in June. We needed to choose the perfect image, something that would capture a sense of calm within urban chaos. My team suggested Paley Park, which is a pocket park with a waterfall in Midtown.

In the original painting, I hadn’t included buildings behind the waterfall. They suggested adding them to ground the location in the city. I painted buildings separately and combined the images digitally in Photoshop. I will probably write a separate post about how I created the cover if you want to hear more about that process.

When it came time to ask for blurbs, I asked , , and . Mari sent her beautiful blurb the day I submitted the final art, and it made me cry at 1 am.

We also did the layouts, typography, and final mockups. In August, I received the color proofs of the entire book as loose-leaf pages. I needed to review them to make sure they matched the digital imagery.

The content of the book was 100% done at the end of August and sent off to production. I got the sample of the cover, and it was so cool to feel it in my hands at scale. The book went live for pre-order on the Rizzoli website at the end of August.

Getting ready for book launch

I got my first author copy in September!! Holding my little book baby in my hand was the most surreal experience. It had been about 1.5 years from book deal to print, which felt very fast from everything I know about publishing. The quality turned out incredible. Rizzoli is known for its gorgeous art books, and they absolutely delivered. The pages actually feel like watercolor paper.

In February, I went into the office to sign the advanced copies. Seeing stacks of my books all stacked up felt like a dream come true.

Marketing the book

In the 3 months before the book launch, I switched to focus on marketing. Here are a few of the strategies I’ve been working on to get the word out.

In December, I was asked to write an editorial piece for Imagine5, a climate storytelling organization. It went live last week, and you can read it here.

I’ve been posting on social media several times a week about the book. I started a series on social media where I go to my favorite quiet places. I’ve been filming it ASMR style with just the natural sounds of these calming places. You can follow along for those here.

When I was writing the book, I interviewed several experts on sound and quiet. I recorded all those video calls and need to cut them down into short clips.

I’ve always dreamed of making a book one day, but this wasn’t the book or way I expected it would happen. So for my fellow Substack writers, you never know who is reading your emails!

I wanted an analog way to reflect on my phone use at the end of each week, so I started an art project where I handwrite my screen time.

This week, I made a watercolor painting of my screen time. Writing out each stat by hand helped me really process the data. I felt pretty good about this week. Instagram was two hours total, which felt reasonable since I use it for work.

This practice complements the mindful app blocker I built called Free Time, which helps me pause before scrolling. It’s been working and has cut my screen time down by two hours a day. My goal isn’t zero screen time, just finding balance.

I posted the painting on Reddit, and it reached the top of the Digital Minimalism subreddit, with 30K views in the past 4 days.

This comment stuck with me. It does feel like my screen time is a self-portrait of my week. This little snapshot reminds me of where my time and attention went. And drawing it out makes me reflect and set intentions for the next week.

How to draw your screen time

1. Print your reference image

Go to Settings and then scroll down to “Screen Time” in your iPhone. You can then print out that photo. I put mine in Figma to turn it into a PDF with the sizing I wanted.

2. Choose your medium

You can choose whatever medium you want, but even just using pencil and paper has a meaningful impact in processing this information.

3. Trace

If you have a lightbox, you can use it to trace your screen time onto the paper. You can also tape the printed reference image to a window and put paper on top to trace directly.

4. Reflect

Voila! You’ve hand-drawn your screen time. It doesn’t need to be pretty or perfect to be a tool for reflection. Write out on a separate piece of paper any reflections from this week or intentions you want to set for next week. Maybe you want to spend 10 minutes less on Instagram.

Reading

I’ve gone down a rabbit-hole of Silicon Valley tell-alls. I’m currently reading Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams which is about the early days of Facebook told by their first Director of Public Policy. It’s wild to hear some of the stories of her forming foreign relations to expand Facebook around the world and the political dynamics behind the scenes. I’m still at the beginning and I just read about her being sent to Myanmar alone and thinking she was about to be held hostage. It also is very critical of Sheryl Sandberg which I wasn’t expecting. Here’s a good summary I found on Substack of the book for those curious.

I’ve also been reading Brotopia by Emily Chang, which I found on a stoop in Park Slope. Brotopia has been really helpful in learning about the history of Silicon Valley and the gender dynamics that shaped computer science.

I’ve been studying the science of phone addiction and screen time for the past year to build my app, Free Time, but wanted to zoom out a bit and learn more about how we ended up here in the first place. Making Art With

Most of my art has been digital right now! I’ve become fascinated by the intersection of art + tech and went to an event called WordHack last month where they do an “Open Projector.” People bring up their computers and present the creative technology projects they’ve made. It was really inspiring! They stream all of their events on Twitch and post them on YouTube after if you want to watch them here.

One of my favorites was called “inprogress.works” which is a lightweight social media platform designed to share progress updates on your side projects. You have to post your own weekly progress update to be able to see the feed, which is such a great idea for accountability. View the website here.

I just submitted an application for a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship under their Digital/Electric Art discipline. It felt good to finally communicate how I’ve been thinking about building the app as a form of artistic expression. Here is an excerpt from the application:

My work explores how people can find balance with technology in a culture where constant connectivity is expected and attention is treated as a commodity.

The submitted images document Free Time, a participatory digital art piece in the form of an iOS app blocker. This work invites participants to do something unusual: stop using their phones. Free Time locks distracting apps like Instagram and TikTok, and to unlock them users must pause and complete a short mindfulness or cognitive activity.

These activities are designed as embodiment practices that ask users to think before they scroll by tuning into their sensory experiences.

Learning

I’ve been using my iPad to make these little poetry comics about digital minimalism. I got a new pack of brushes in Procreate and it’s been a total game-changer. I finally feel like I can express myself in color digitally. I want to get better at making digital art this year.

I’m trying to get better at drawing people (when am I not?). Right now, I’m letting go of creating realistic humans and starting to design my own abstract characters. They ended up turning into a Keith Haring meets Strange Planet and I’m very here for it.

Dreaming About

SUMMER! Good god I am not having this winter. My apartment has been 62 degrees most mornings which makes it ~extremely difficult~ to get out of bed.

My goal for next January is to flee to a warm place for at least a week or two. I used to do this in the past, but these past two years I decided to double down on New York in winter. But I’m DONE.

The main reason I can’t currently flee is because my book, Quietest Places in New York City is coming out in less than a month! My pub date got moved up to February 24! So I’m here filming fun content about some of my favorite quietest places.

I just got the invite for my launch event and I nearly started crying because I’m being interviewed by my best friend in the world Abi Inman, who works at NPR and previously worked at Atlas Obscura. It’s so surreal to see it all coming together! It’s on March 10 at the Rizzoli bookstore, I’d love to see you there!!

It reminds me of the early days of my climate journey, when Zero Waste was the trend. It was the era of storing your trash in a mason jar. In 2017, I lived zero waste for a month. I overhauled my life, buying lots of new things to make this transition quickly. A few of those products I bought I still use today. But I wish I had made the transition more slowly, using up products I had before buying new ones.

When I finished the month challenge, living zero waste felt unsustainable in the long term. Since then, I’ve transitioned into living a low-waste lifestyle. I minimize waste when I can, but don’t feel like a failure when I create waste.

So instead of going fully analog, I want to live a Quiet Life. I want to minimize my use of technology when I can, but not feel like a failure when I use it. I want to go analog-ish.

I want to turn down the digital noise, get quiet, and appreciate the world around me. My book, Quietest Places in New York City, is launching on March 3 (and is available to pre-order!). In the book, I selected 67 quiet places to go offline and find calm and peace. For each location, I wrote a guided mindfulness prompt to deepen your appreciation of the environment around you.

For 2026, I want to spend less time online and build a healthy, sustainable relationship with the technology I use. Last year, I built an app called Free Time to help me use my phone more mindfully. And it’s working. It’s so surreal to get texts from my friends saying that their screen time is cut in half. And now that I’m finally done building it, I have the free time I hoped for. I’m making more time for my art and discovering a new style.

In June, I almost started a whole new Substack called A Quiet Life. I even got the domain Analog Club on Substack. The description was “A space for those craving calm. Essays, practical tools, and art on digital minimalism, quiet places, and creative offline living.” Luckily, my friends talked me out of creating a whole separate newsletter and suggested I integrate it into my existing one. Now that I finally launched my app, Free Time last month, I’m finally benefitting from using it! I have more free time to read again. I devoured a few books this month. I read Cry When the Baby Cries by Becky Barnicoat, Fahrenheit 451, All the Way to the River by Elizabeth Gilbert, and Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

I’ve been trying to read something light before bed, because if I read anything too sci-fi or intense, I have wild dreams about it. I find that short, philosophy or Buddhist books before bed have been perfect. Last night, I listened to the Power of Now on audiobook. Nothing like a little Eckhart Tolle to make you fall asleep (in a good way).

As the year ends, I’m so happy to see I read 31 books! Several were graphic novels, like ’s, Tuck Everlasting, which I loved so much and read in 2 days. A lot were research for my own book, Quietest Places in New York, to study silence and sound. And many were about digital minimalism and technology addiction, to build my mindful screen time app. Here are some of picked my favorite books:

Making Art With

I’m back on my quest to get better at drawing people. The children’s book I illustrated for the Building Decarbonization Coalition called The Clean Green Neighborhood was published a few weeks ago. As many of you know, I spent months learning how to draw people for this book. And I’m really happy with how the characters turned out!

Learning for a project is my favorite way to build new skills and stay motivated. Now that this book is finished, I don’t have a clear reason to draw people. But a few weeks ago, I decided to just try drawing them for fun (gasp!).

Now that art is my job, I sometimes struggle to separate the joy of making art from the financial aspects of my business. Doing silly little drawings like these felt like a good place to start.

I went to the art section in the library and found this book on Kawaii drawing. It’s not the style of art I plan to create, but I figured learning from examples on how cute drawings are created could help me develop my own style.

It was filled with these tutorial drawings that reminded me of a horse-drawing book I used when I was a kid. My best friend and I went to the cafe in the Brooklyn Museum and spent the afternoon working on art projects. I was drawing mermaids and she was animating a project. It was so sweet.

Learning

I’ve been making a bunch of reels for social media because all 3 of my big projects launched in a 1 week period (the app, the first copy of Quietest Places book arrived, and the children’s book launched). Soo lots to talk about!

I’ve never been the most confident on camera, but I started thinking about it as practice for public speaking, and now it feels less cringey when I’m yapping to myself. I like to imagine I’m practicing for a future talk or presentation (a big dream of mine is to do a TED talk one day!).

The most helpful thing I did was download a teleprompter app on my iPhone so I can see talking points while I record myself. I found myself looking away from the camera or fidgeting too much if I didn’t have this. If you want to watch me get over my nervousness on camera, you can follow @mindfulnicole on Instagram.

Inspired by

Over Thanksgiving, I went home to my parents in Pennsylvania. My mom and I went to a local museum, the Michener Museum, and got to see one of my favorite paintings ever. It’s a 22-foot oil painting by a local artist, Daniel Garber, called A Wooded Watershed. I grew up going to this museum and was always mesmerized by this painting. But going as an adult, as an artist, it hit different this time.

My mom and I sat on the bench and both sketched the painting in our little notebooks. It was such a lovely moment and felt like we were in our own private art class.

Listening to

My childhood best friend and I went camping this summer and we talked about how I wanted to get better at finding music that I like. A few weeks ago, she texted me that she couldn’t make it to a concert and asked if I wanted her ticket. It was for a band named

My theory is that being on social media less is better for the environment.

The less we scroll, the less targeted ads we see. So we shop less. The less we shop, the less ends up in landfills.

This makes us appreciate what we have more. So we care for what we already have more deeply. And if we need something, we rely on our community more to share more rather than consume more.

When we’re not scrolling as much, we’re also not comparing ourselves to others. Instead of connecting to others over the internet, we’re connecting to ourselves and our loved ones. We get outside more, appreciating nature more. This makes us want to protect our planet more.

Reading

Over the past year I’ve been listening to every Becky Chambers sci-fi book out there. She’s a pioneer of the hopepunk genre, which imagines worlds of optimism over dystopia. When the real world has felt overwhelming or I’ve been stressed about work, this cozy sci-fi world has been my favorite place to escape to.

I’m working on the 4th and final book in the Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet series and am going to be very sad when it ends. The first and second books were my favorites but the third one I had to stop because it got a bit morbid.

I’ve been listening the audiobooks and the narrator is the best I’ve ever heard. There are so many characters and her ability to bring each to life is fantastic. Here’s a glimpse of how Becky Chambers describes her process of writing sci-fi from an interview with Wired.

Learning

For the past 4 months, I‘ve been building an app called Free Time that helps you use your phone mindfully. It locks distracting apps and you solve a puzzle or do a mindfulness activity to unlock them.

I have learned SO much building this app. I’ve always been curious about UX design. When I started on this project, I told myself that worse-case scenario, it would be a good portfolio piece. And best case scenario, it could become my main source of income. The dream is that it could support me so I can create any kind of art I want, rather than relying on commissions.

Last week, I found it was approved by Apple to launch in the App Store when I’m ready! I could barely believe it. I’m doing one or two more weeks of beta testing before I launch. If you want to get early access, you can get on the waitlist to beta test it here.

I’m looking back at some of my first designs and I feel so proud of myself for how far I’ve come. I totally fell in love with UX design through this process and am curious to see how that will unfold outside of this app.

Making Art With

I just got back from an 11 day trip to Paris with my mom! It was an amazing vacation that I am beyond grateful to have shared with her.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was being able to sketch and paint en plein air together. My mom was trained as an art therapist and has been taking watercolor classes since she retired. Being able to go to beautiful places together and quietly make art together was so special.

I submitted my book proposal for my second book in the series, which will be Quietest Places in Paris, right before I left for France. This trip was so inspiring and got me very excited to create it.

Listening to

When I was on the flight home, I re-watched Interstellar, one of my all-time favorite movies. It really made 3 hours zoom by on an 8 hour flight, so that was an excellent life choice. The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is fantastic and I used to listen to it while I work. Highly recommend. Listen here.

Reading

I read The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman and loved learning about the history and design choices that go into objects we barely notice (like light switches and doors). It was originally published in 1988 and it’s wild to hear his accurate predictions of the technology to come. I’ve been learning UX design and this book is a classic for understanding the fundamentals.

Making Art With

For those of you who have seen me in the past few months, you know I’ve become absolutely obsessed with building an app called Free Time. It’s designed to help you use your phone mindfully by locking distracting apps. To unlock your apps, you have to slow down and solve a puzzle or do a mindfulness activity to unlock them.

I’ve been beta testing with friends for the past 2 months and it’s been going great. I honestly can’t believe that I’m in the home stretch and starting a plan to launch it. If you want to get on the waitlist to beta test it, you can here.

I know this may seem like a pivot from my normal climate content, but my current dream is that this app does well and could provide me with enough passive income to support my art. Real talk: this administration has impacted my main source of income since a lot of my normal clients have had their funding cut.

This prompted some big picture reflection and made me think about how I want to expand and grow as an artist. I’ve realized that building this app feels like a form of artistic expression to me. It may not be my normal climate art, but it does create an experience where people disconnect from their technology and reconnect to themselves and their environment in a more intentional way.

Learning

I’m going on vacation with my mom to Paris for 2 weeks and I’m so excited! We leave this weekend and I’ve been trying to practice my French a bit more (I’m conversational and very rusty). I found this awesome website 6pm in Paris that’s like Masterclass meets Netflix for French. It’s all these short little films that are in French with subtitles with lessons after to analyze the vocabulary from the film.

I’ve also been working on my second book proposal for the Quietest Places in Paris, so all of this has been very helpful to get me inspired. If you have any Paris recommendations please send them my way.

Ok this is where this newsletter will get progressively more silly. I’ve obviously been listening to Taylor Swift’s new album. I’m not a full Swiftie but I do love her music. I know there’s lots of opinions on this new album but I like it! I’ve had Honey and Elizabeth Taylor stuck in my head all week.

I remember when Midnights came out a few years ago, I was listening on the subway and imaged the car filled with people quietly listening to it at the same time. I don’t know, something about that makes me smile.

Now that its officially fall, I’ve begun my annual Gilmore Girls rewatch. This made me think of a painting I did from 4 years ago, pre-climate art days.

I was at a house party the other day and heard someone listening to Gilmore Girls through the walls as I waited for the elevator. This makes me wonder how many of you out there are also rewatching right now too 😅

This book began right here, as a Substack post to you all, called Quietest Places in NYC. That post was forwarded to an editor at Rizzoli, who reached out and asked if I wanted to turn it into a book.

When I wrote that original post, I thought it was the least climate-related piece I’ve ever written. When I signed the book deal, I knew if I was going to put my heart into this work, I needed it to have a climate focus.

So after lots of research, I found a clear connection between climate change and quiet. I started an Artist-in-Residency at the non-profit Quiet Communities, and their team helped me understand that most of the noise we hear is generated by fossil-fueled powered machines (cars, air conditioners, construction). This led me to my thesis: fossil fuels are noisy and clean energy is quiet.

I began to realize that the quietest places in New York are often the greenest too. They’re places where you can hear birds singing, the river flowing, or barely any street traffic from all the trees buffering the sound.

As I uncovered hidden gems across New York, I discovered secret ways the city is becoming more sustainable. From the Healing Forest on Roosevelt Island to thriving community gardens in the East Village and even a rooftop farm in Sunset Park.

In the book, half of the locations are green spaces. All the restaurants are plant-based, vegetarian, or farm-to-table. And I share the innovative ways New York is becoming more climate resilient.

Creating this book has been my love letter to New York. I painted 67 of my favorite places in the city. It’s been so hard not to share the art from this book until now, and I’m so excited for you to see the new style I was able to develop.

Writing this book allowed me to explore three of my favorite things: New York, mental health, and sustainability. Quiet became the connecting thread. I define quiet not as the absence of sound, but as the presence of calm within and around you. Through this lens, I began imagining a quieter, more sustainable, and joyful future.

Reading

I read Your Head is a Houseboat by Campbell Walker in a single day. The art is so fun, and it ties together concepts from Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and mindfulness using hilarious metaphors.

One of the lines that spoke to me was “fear makes sure you don’t take risks, because risks are how you can lose what you have.”

Making Art With

I’ve been illustrating a children’s book for the Building Decarbonization Coalition called the Clean Green Neighborhood (think: Richard Scarry meets clean energy). It’s about thermal energy networks and the labor unions and workers that help make neighborhoods more sustainable. It has been such a delight to bring this project to life for them!

I started painting last week, and it’s turning out so darn cute. I had to figure out a new process for painting double spreads so the art flows seamlessly across two pages. I’ve got a system down now and am loving how it’s coming together. The book is coming out this November!

Learning

I’ve been learning UX design to create the screen-time blocking app I’ve been building. Over the past month, I’ve read Hooked, Indistractable, Make Time, Tiny Habits, and The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (I haven’t been watching TV, so I have a lot of free time to read).

My app is called Free Time, and the idea is to help you use your phone less by breaking the habit of checking distracting apps. To access these apps, you go through a three-step process to slow you down:

1. Solve a puzzle like a word scramble or a math problem

2. Notice where you are to understand your screen time patterns

3. Have a mindful moment to breathe

Dreaming About

I’m swapping the Watching section to a Dreaming About section. I’ve been dreaming about what I want future Nicole to be like. I imagine her being outdoorsy and camping and surfing. I currently do none of those things.

So I’ve been on a mission to change that. This weekend, I took Amtrak up to visit my very outdoorsy childhood best friend who lives in Providence. She drove us out to Cape Cod, where we camped in a National Park and had the best time.

While we were there, I began to remember all the times I camped throughout my life. From growing up going on camping trips with my parents, to camping on the beach in Vietnam when I was solo traveling through Southeast Asia. I even did a night of backpacking in the Desolation Wilderness in Tahoe with my friend .

I realized I've been conflating camping with backpacking. Once I realized I didn’t need ultra-light backpacking gear or incredible hiking skills, camping began to seem much more accessible. It was a big aha moment for me and helped me imagine being closer to the future Nicole I dream of.

Creating Comics with K. Woodman-Maynard

I’m going to be a guest on K. Woodman-Maynard’s comic-making workshop, K’s Kettle, on August 19th at 3 pm EST. We'll be drawing short comics on the theme of weather.

​K. is an incredible watercolor artist and has illustrated the graphic novel adaptation of Tuck Everlasting and The Great Gatsby. In each of these, weather plays an important role in the story, and she’ll share how she depicts it in comics-specific ways.

K. and I will chat while we all make comics for about 40 minutes. It’s a welcoming space to create, learn, and connect. For the last 15 minutes, for those who want to, we’ll share our comics together.

K. is the expert on comics, but I’ll be sharing some of the tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years on how to use color to convey mood and weather in relation to climate change. Here’s one of my very first comics I did when I went to the Center for Cartoon Studies for a week last summer.

It’s time for my Creative Recommendations for July! These are just for my lovely ~patrons~ aka my paying subscribers. Each month, I curate my favorite things I’ve been reading, learning, watching, and making art with. If you want to upgrade to receive these once a month, you’d make my day 🥰

Context: June was a wild one for me. I found out my publisher loved my Quietest Places in New York book and wanted to add 12 more locations to it. So I’ve been back into production mode, making a ton of art and writing with a fast turnaround (now due July 24). I’ve also been doing a lot of big-picture thinking about what direction I want my creative career to go. Soo… a lot of these recommendations relate to handling stress! Let’s go :)

Learning

The connection between screens and mental health is pretty clear, so I thought that cutting down my screen time would be a helpful way to tackle some of my stress. I’ve tried a million of the screen blocking apps and have gripes with them, so I figured why not make my own?

So I built an app! I’ve been working on it every day after work for the past 3 weeks. It’s called Free Time and it’s fully functioning right now which is WILD. It’s designed to stop unconscious scrolling by inserting a small pause before you open your most distracting apps.

First, you solve a quick puzzle or do a breathing exercise. Then, you take a moment to notice where you are. After that, your apps unlock for a short window before they’re re-blocked. You can designate phone-free zones, so no more scrolling in bed or while you’re waiting in line. I’m still working out a bunch of bugs but you can get on the beta test waitlist here!

I used Claude and ChatGPT to code it, which I have complicated feelings about. I know how to code in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, but I don’t know Swift (which is what iOS apps are built in). The feeling of learning a new programming language is very satisfying though and makes me feel proud of myself for stretching those muscles again.

Making Art With

I bought charcoal and used it for the first time since high school art class. I was obsessed with it in high school and especially loved the feeling of getting messy and washing my hands after class.

It was such a nostalgic moment to tap into that feeling again, but as a full-time artist today. Little Nicole would be very proud 🥹 I took my first figure drawing class which was awesome and challenging. Towards the end, I started making comic-style frames of the figure.

I dug up an old still life I did in high school AP Art class. I haven’t drawn anything this realistic in so long that I honestly forgot that I’m capable of it. It makes me happy that I’ve found new ways of creating art beyond just rendering reality.

Reading

I’ve been reading Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg and really enjoying it.

Honestly, I have a good amount of healthy habits in place like eating healthy, swimming, meditating, and not drinking. But I’ve been feeling anxious the past month so I’m trying to fine tune a few of these habits to decrease my stress levels further.

The 2 new habits I want to build are to increase my workout frequency to 2-3x/week and use my phone less.

BJ Fogg has lots of graphs and formulas to help break down behavior change and the psychology of building and breaking habits. Here’s an example for how I’m making a tiny change to decrease my screen time:

• After I sit down on the subway, I will take out my AirPods and read on my Kindle or a book. Then I celebrate with a smile to myself.

Watching

I’ve been watching the new season of The Bear and am constantly mesmerized by the color grading. Color grading is a post-production process that manipulates the colors of a TV show or movie to evoke a specific mood.

I’m absolutely not an expert in this but it does make me think about color palettes and what kind of mood I want to create when people look at my art.

It’s time for my Creative Recommendations for June! Each month, I curate my favorite things I’ve been reading, learning, watching, and making art with. These are just for my lovely paying subscribers.

Reading

This weekend, I read the graphic novel Feelings: A Story in Seasons by Manjit Thapp in under an hour. The art is absolutely stunning. Her ability to convey mood through color is one of the best I’ve seen. The concept is around processing emotions in the context of seasons, something I have been noodling on a lot these days. I’ve also been listening to the audiobook of The Hidden Life of Trees at the end of the day to wind down. It’s like the audio-only version of a David Attenborough film and infinitely soothing. I started reading it as research for my Quietest Places in New York City book because I created mindfulness prompts for each location. I wanted to weave in grounding techniques to connect us with nature even when we are in urban environments. Listen here.

Making Art With

I just started using pen in my illustration, and I’m so proud of how it’s turning out. I’m using uniball Vision Elite pen. I’ve been exploring how to use a unified color palette and it’s been blowing my mind. Until now, I haven’t mixed any colors in my Kuratake watercolor kit. Learning how to mix and tone down the vibrancy feels like unlocking a new style of art without buying new materials.

Also I’m open for commissions! I’m hoping to do more editorial work this year (maybe in this new style?). Feel free to reach out if you ever have a project you’d like me to work on like watercolor infographics, editorial art, gifts, etc.

Learning

I’m trying to do “Fun Fridays” where I make art for pleasure at the end of the week for a few hours. It started one afternoon when I had a migraine and all I could do was paint. Looking at screens hurts when I have a migraine, so I just put paint to paper. I painted on the biggest paper I’ve ever worked on (18”x24”) for the first time and had so much fun. I want to try painting on larger scales, working towards a bigger goal of creating large-scale or interactive public art.

Listening to

I’ve been binging the podcast by Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson. It’s a show about climate solutions and helping us envision what getting right on climate looks like, so we can bring that vision into reality. I think about creating art with the same intention, so listening and learning from Ayana always brings me joy!

She did a reunion episode with Alex Blumberg that was amazing. I miss the How to Save a Planet podcast they did together and it was fun hearing the origin stories of it. Listen here.

I’ve started listening to the podcast and really enjoy it. It’s a wellness podcast with a practical, playful tone. This was such a fun episode with one of my favorite food creators, . They talk about using the “novelty rule” to embrace newness, whether you are making old habits or chores feel new or trying new experience. This is a neuroscience hack to make more meaningful memories, slow down time, and live more intentionally. Listen here.
